Happy International Women’s Day and Women's History Month to the women of metro Detroit near and far who continuously make a difference in our communities and all around the world.
Let’s be honest, with all the demands and labels placed on women, especially black women. We are taught to be the backbone of the world, of the community, and of our families. It can be challenging to tune out all the noise of how a woman is supposed to be. She’s too this or not enough of that. All the contradictions contort the way we see ourselves and our worldview. Suffering from Superwoman Syndrome. Instead of carrying the weight of other people's expectations for us (or what we think they are), let’s redefine our own.
Let’s show up on our own terms - by reclaiming our sense of self. It’s knowing that you are enough as is and when you are good to yourself, you are even better to those you love.
That’s why we are changing the narrative around how we view ourselves and Detroit. I love to see the beauty of my city looking back at me. Taking a drive through the neighborhood, taking a stroll downtown…I love seeing these dynamic, revolutionary murals of women just being.
I created the Beauty of Detroit Box to let women here know that they can bask in the glow of their own beauty, without titles (of giver - caregiver, mom, activist, artist, boss, etc), without being everything to and for everyone else all the time AND the comfort in knowing that they can be loved on by their community, by their city!
There isn’t anything women can’t do, especially women from Detroit. To all my Detroit beauties, Detroit has its eyes on you. So continue to dream, wonder, create.
